How to Survive Christmas Without Cracking a Tooth

How to Survive Christmas Without Cracking a Tooth

Here it is, friends; your official Smiles of Ryde festive survival guide. Christmas is all fun and games until someone bites down on a rogue pistachio or decides that candy canes are “basically soft.” Every December, our team at Smiles of Ryde sees a spike in cracked teeth, damaged fillings, and the occasional “I tried to open a bottle with my teeth” festive emergency. So, before you spend Christmas afternoon frantically Googling “is a broken tooth an emergency?”, here’s our ultimate guide on how to survive Christmas without cracking a tooth.

1. Don’t open pistachios with your teeth

We know it’s tempting, but if your fingers can’t open it, your molars definitely shouldn’t. Pistachios are responsible for more cracked teeth than we’d like to admit.

2. Avoid biting candy canes

They look innocent, they taste nostalgic, and they will betray you. If you must indulge, let candy canes dissolve slowly in your mouth instead of biting down hard on them.

3. Bones are for dogs, not people

Christmas roasts often hide sneaky little bone fragments that your teeth and fillings won’t survive. Go slow, chew mindfully, and avoid any mystery crunches as best you can.

4. Ice cubes are NOT snacks

Whether you’re cooling off with a cold drink or feeling tempted to crunch on an ice cube in the summer heat, remember that ice is for cooling, not chewing. Your teeth are strong, but trust us on this one, especially if you have fillings, your teeth may be at risk of cracking.

5. Beware the Christmas crack(le)

Homemade toffees, brittles, and a favourite savoury crunch of Christmas time, pork crackling, can be super delicious, but they all pose a high risk of damaging your teeth. A good rule of thumb? If it makes a ‘crack’ sound when you drop it on your plate, maybe don’t bite into it.

A safe, happy smile is the best gift you can give yourself this Christmas.

If something does go wrong (we’re absolutely not judging – it happens!) keep the affected area clean, avoid chewing on that side, and jump online to book your appointment to be first in when we’re back. We’ll make sure your new year starts with a healthy, pain-free smile.

Wishing you a tooth-safe, joy-filled festive season!
