Every August, the Australian Dental Association (ADA) runs Dental Health Week, an event designed to get Aussies thinking about healthy smiles and improving oral habits. This year’s event ran from August 4th to August 10th (we’re a little late but dental health matters all year round!) with the theme of children’s oral health milestones. Essentially, shining a spotlight on how parents and caregivers can help little ones “reach every S-milestone” throughout their early years.
What are “S-milestones”?
S-milestones are the major dental milestones that children should be meeting by the time they reach certain ages. We’ve included below some images provided by the ADA to help parents learn about these different stages of dental health for their kids. Feel free to save and print these for your fridge as a reminder of the various S-milestones.

How can you set your child up for lifelong dental success in honour of Dental Health Week?
This year’s Dental Health Week campaign highlights four essential steps that can make all the difference:
1. Brush twice per day with fluoride toothpaste
Good oral care starts with brushing. Encourage your child to brush their teeth morning and night with a small, pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. For younger children, help them brush as best as you can to ensure every tooth is cleaned properly – especially tricky back molars.
2. Clean between teeth daily
It’s not just about brushing – plaque can hide between teeth where toothbrushes can’t reach. Introduce your child to flossing (safely) as soon as two teeth touch. This simple daily habit can help prevent cavities and gum problems later in life.
3. Choose a nutritious, low-sugar diet
We all know sugar is the main enemy of healthy teeth. Limiting soft drinks, lollies, and sugary snacks can go a long way in protecting your child’s enamel. Instead, focus on a balanced diet rich in fresh fruits (for a natural sugar hit), vegetables, dairy, and lean proteins to help keep their mouth (and body) healthy.
4. Visit your dentist regularly
Routine check-ups are key to spotting problems early and keeping teeth on track. By making dental visits a normal part of growing up, your child will feel more comfortable in the chair and less likely to fear going to the dentist later in life.
By following these four steps, parents and caregivers can help give their children the best chance at a lifetime of healthy, confident smiles.
