Nothing says “Aussie summer” quite like an ice-cold frozen drink or a visit from the Mr Whippy van but if you wince every time you reach for a Golden Gaytime, you’re definitely not alone. Sensitive teeth are surprisingly common, so here’s what our dentists want you to know about keeping your summer smile pain-free.
1. Avoid brushing directly after eating or drinking
This isn’t a well-known tip, but it’s something we’d like to share. Yes, it is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day, BUT you don’t need to reach for the toothbrush immediately after eating or drinking. In fact, holding off for about an hour or so can give your enamel a chance to slightly recover from temporary softening caused by acidic foods and drinks. Try rinsing your mouth while drinking a cup of room temperature water instead – you’ll rehydrate at the same time!
2. Switch to a toothpaste made specifically for sensitive teeth
This one’s simple but effective. Toothpastes designed for sensitivity contain ingredients like potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride that help block tiny pores in your teeth to reduce cold contact with exposed nerves. Stick with it for a few weeks and you’ll likely notice a big difference. If you’re stuck for which brand to use, ask us and we can help you with some recommendations.

3. Soften your brushing technique
If you brush your teeth like you’re scrubbing the BBQ, it’s time to ease up a little. Over-brushing or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can sometimes cause gum recession and expose sensitive dentine underneath. Choose a medium or soft-bristled brush and use gentle circular motions instead.
4. Check whether there are any underlying issues
Sometimes, tooth sensitivity can be a sign of something more ominous. You might be looking at a cavity, a cracked tooth, or worn enamel. Booking a quick dental check-up can pinpoint the cause, allowing your dentist to offer advice and treatment before it becomes a bigger issue.
5. Adapt to life with sensitive teeth
Until things improve, try taking small sips of cold drinks through a straw or changing your eating style slightly for frozen desserts (don’t bite directly into them). Just remember, you don’t have to avoid all the yummy summer treats – lamingtons, pavlova, and Anzac bickies are all delicious alternatives!
