What’s the process and steps?
1
We make sure you are seated in a comfortable position as root canal therapy procedures can take 45 minutes to 1 hour.
2
We apply a numbing gel to the area we will treat to ensure that any injection will be as pain-free as possible.
3
We numb the tooth to ensure a pain-free and comfortable procedure.
4
We remove the broken or infected part of the tooth, ensuring that the remaining tooth structure is strong and clean. We place a strengthening band around the tooth for extra support through the procedure. The band will provide strength similar to a crown. We do not want to risk the tooth breaking.
5
We use X-rays and specialised instruments to find all the canals within your tooth. We then remove the infected nerve, wash and dry the area before placing an antibacterial medication inside. The medication is left for 1-2 weeks to allow the tooth to start healing.
6
We clean the canals within your tooth with specialised hand and rotary instruments, wash and dry your tooth. A second medication placed inside to clear any remaining bacteria. The second medication is left for 1-2 weeks to remove any remaining bacteria and further heal the tooth.
7
We seal all the canal, closing all air spaces where bacteria could grow. The Root canal portion of the treatment is now complete. We will then wait to ensure the tooth and bone has healed; before removing the strengthening band and placing a crown.

Frequently Asked Questions
Root Canal Therapy is where a dead, painful or infected tooth is cleaned and filled to once again be painless and functional.
When a tooth has died, the nerve will become infected and can cause terrible facial swelling, ranging from a recurrent pimple to a life-threatening swelling that can cut off your air supply. Root Canal Treatment will remove the infection and heal the surrounding tissue.
No, the root canal treatment is not painful. Our patients have the infected tooth numbed up before treatment begins. The pain people associate with root canal treatment is the dead nerve and infection present before the root canal therapy has begun.
Your dentist will make sure you are comfortable, and the tooth is numb. Over a series of around three appointments, we remove the infection from the tooth, clean it thoroughly, and then seal it to prevent any bacteria from ever being able to grow in the tooth again.
During the procedure, you will be numb; once the anaesthetic has worn off, some patients say they feel a little bruising. We recommend that you take a panadol or a similar painkiller if you feel any small discomfort.
At Smiles of Ryde Dental Surgery, we recommend six-monthly checkups; this allows us to check all your teeth and ensure any issues are caught and treated while they are minimal. We are also able to give you regular advice on how to clean and care for your teeth. Large holes and big fillings can lead to root canal treatment.
The cost of Root Canal Therapy in West Ryde can vary depending on the number of canals inside the tooth and the tooth’s location in your mouth. At Smiles of Ryde Dental Surgery, we discuss all your options and the pro’s and con’s of each to ensure you have an affordable, cost-effective and long term solution.
Root canal treatment is not expensive compared to replacing a tooth. It is always cheaper to save a tooth with root canal therapy than leaving a gap requiring either implants or a bridge.
A dying tooth will cause a throbbing pain that can not be relieved with a simple panadol. If the pain interrupts sleep and occurs spontaneously without eating or drinking, this is a definite sign of the need for root canal treatment.
Occasionally your tooth may die without pain; in this case, your dentist can show you the infection on your x-ray, or you may even have facial swelling.
Root canal therapy is very successful when the tooth can be sealed or successfully restored. If we have enough tooth above the gum line and rebuild it for you, root canal therapy will last many years. Our dentist will always let you know if we are concerned about the success of the treatment.
Occasionally some people experience bruising or tenderness after root canal therapy, this is normal and can be easily treated with a panadol. Our dentist will always place a reinforcing band over the tooth for extra strength to ensure the tooth remains strong through treatment and up until the crown is placed.
